active A publication status that indicates that a title is currently being published.
announced never published A publication status that indicates plans for a serial were announced, but the title was never published.
ceased A publication status indicating that a title is no longer being published.
CODEN CODEN is an alphanumeric code that uniquely identifies a specific publication. It was devised by the American Society for Testing and Materials, mainly for use on scientific and technical titles. The Chemical Abstracts Service assigns new CODENs.
Composition May appear on the Full Description tab. Refers to the method used for composing a print publication, such as cold type, computerized, or linotype.
corporate author May appear on the Publisher & Ordering Info tab. Refers to an organization or body that sponsors the editorial content of a serial, although their primary purpose is not publishing.

forthcoming A publication status indicating that an announcement has been made that a publication will be published in the future.
ISSN

International Standard Serial Number. It's an eight-digit number assigned by the ISSN International Centre and its network of national centers. There's a hyphen after the fourth digit as a visual aid.

Not all serials have an ISSN. Publishers who wish to apply for a free ISSN should contact the national library or bibliographic center in the country where they are publishing. To contact the international center:

keyword The keyword index includes the non-numeric terms from all of the other indexes (Title, Subject, Features & Attributes, Media Type, etc.).
LC Class(ification) Number Notation designating the subject in the Library of Congress Classification System to which the serial belongs.
refereed Otherwise known as peer-review. Refers to the system of critical evaluation of manuscripts/articles by professional colleagues or peers. The content of refereed publications is sanctioned, vetted, or otherwise approved by a peer-review or editorial board. The peer-review and evaluation system is utilized to protect, maintain, and raise the quality of scholarly material published in serials. Publications subject to the referee process are assumed, then, to contain higher quality content than those that aren't.
relevance A measure of how well results match your query, often based on frequency of occurrence within an entry.
research pending Indicates that ulrichsweb.com has sought data from a publication, but has not yet received information.
search criterion A "search criterion" is (1) a term you type into an empty field, (2) a criterion you select from a drop down menu, or (3) a criterion you select by clicking a checkbox or radio button.

special feature May appear on the Full Description tab. refers to features such as bibliographies, illustrations, charts, and reviews of items, such as books, films, or software.
special index/int'l ord May appear on the Full Description tab. Indicates editorial involvement by an international organization, such as the United Nations or the European Union
suspended A publication status indicating that a title is not currently being published, but the publisher intends to resume publication.
thumbnail A very small image used in the ulrichsweb.com help file that forms a link to a larger image that opens in a pop up window. Thumbnails are used to decrease the load time of a page (since thumbnails take less time to load than full-size images).
title field

The title fields are:

  • title
  • subtitle
  • former titles
  • many different kinds of alternate titles (such as a translated title)
unverified A publication status indicating that a publisher was asked to verify the status of a publication but the publisher has not yet done so.
wire services May appear on the Full Description tab. Indicates the use of a specific news or wire service for some editorial content.
