Field or Index Name

How to use this field:

Abstracting and Indexing Services

Advanced Search:

In a Search For field, you can (1) choose a name from the index (click the INDEX button to the left of the Search For field), (2) type in the name of an abstracting or indexing service, or (3) type in a word in the name.

Boolean Search:

Enter ai= followed by the name of an abstracting or indexing service or a word in the name.

Notes:

For a current list of A&I services, use the drop down menu on the Advanced Search screen to change any "Search On" index to Abstracting & Indexing Services, then click the INDEX button to the left.

You can also click BROWSE on the navigation bar and follow the Abstracting & Indexing Services link.

It's best to choose an A&I service from an index rather than typing in the name -- so that you're searching on the exact name of the A&I service as it appears in Ulrich's records.

If you check the "Abstracted/Indexed" box in the Features section of the Advanced Search form, your search results will return titles that are abstracted or indexed by any service. If your search results need to return titles abstracted or indexed by particular service(s), put their names in a "Search For" field.

Circulation

Advanced Search:

You can limit your search results just to titles that meet circulation size criteria by entering those criteria into the field shown below:

 

CODEN

Advanced Search:

In a Search For field, you can type in a CODEN.

Boolean Search:

Enter co= followed by a CODEN

Communications Options

Advanced Search:

In a Search For field, you can type in one of the communications listed below.

Boolean Search:

Enter cm= followed by a one of the communications listed below.

Note:

The communications options are:

  • E-mail
  • Fax
  • Toll Free
  • Website

To bring up a list of all communications options: use the drop down menu on the Advanced Search screen to change any "Search On" index to Communications Options, then click the INDEX button to the left.

You can also click BROWSE on the navigation bar and follow the Communications Options link.

 

Country of Publication

Advanced Search:

In a Search For field, type in the name of a country. Or use the drop down menu (shown below) in the Limit Your Results area of the Advanced Search screen.

It's not necessary to scroll down the drop down menu if you know the country you wish to choose. Simply type in the first letter of the country and ulrichsweb.com will jump you to that country (or the closest alphabetical match in the list).

Boolean Search:

Enter cc= followed by the name of a country.

Note:

For a current list of all countries included in ulrichsweb.com records, use the drop down menu on the Advanced Search screen to change any "Search On" index to Country of Publication, then click the INDEX button to the left

It's best to choose a Country of Publication from an index rather than typing in the name -- so that you're searching on the exact name of the country as it appears in Ulrich's records. For instance, the UK is listed as "United Kingdom" in the ulrichsweb.com database. North Korea is listed as "Korea, N."

Currency See price range.

 

Dewey Decimal Number

Advanced Search:

In a Search For field, type in a Dewey number (or part of one), as described below.

Boolean Search:

Enter dd= or dd< or dd> followed by a Dewey number (or part of one, as described below. For example, dd>500 and dd<800 will find all titles classified with a Dewey number greater than 500 but less than 800.

Note:

You can enter the entire Dewey number or the first numbers followed by a wildcard symbol. For example, you could enter 813.54 or 81$ and get the same results.

More than one Dewey number may have been assigned if a periodical covers more than one subject.

Document Availability

Advanced Search:

You can limit your search results just to titles that are available for document delivery through a specific service in two ways:

(1) Choose a service from the drop down box as shown below:

(2) In a Search For field, you can type in the name of a service, type in word(s) from the name of the service, or choose a service from the index (click the INDEX button to the left of the Search For field).

Boolean Search:

Enter da= followed by the name of a document delivery service (see note below).

Note:

For a current list of document delivery services, use the drop down menu on the Advanced Search screen to change any index to Document Availability, then click the INDEX button to the left.

You can also click BROWSE on the navigation bar and follow the Document Availability link.

It's best to choose a document delivery service from an index rather than typing in the name -- so that you're searching on the exact name of the service as it appears in Ulrich's records.

Electronic Vendor

Advanced Search:

In a Search For field, you can (1) type in the name of an electronic vendor, (2) type in a word in the name, or (3) choose a name from the index (click the INDEX button to the left of the Search For field).

Boolean Search:

Enter ev= followed by the name of a an electronic vendor service (see note below).

Note:

For a current list of electronic vendors, use the drop down menu on the Advanced Search screen to change any index to Electronic Vendor, then click the INDEX button to the left.

You can also click BROWSE on the navigation bar and follow the Electronic Vendor link.

It's best to choose an electronic vendor from an index rather than typing in the name -- so that you're searching on the exact name of the vendor as it appears in Ulrich's records.

 

Features

Advanced Search:

Choose from the features listed below by clicking the appropriate checkboxes:

Features and Attributes

Advanced Search:

In a Search For field, type in the name of a feature or attribute (see note below).

Boolean Search:

Enter fe= followed by the name of a feature or attribute (see note below).

For a current list of features and attributes, use the drop down menu on the Advanced Search screen to change any index to Features and Attributes, then click the INDEX button to the left.

You can also click BROWSE on the navigation bar and follow the Features and Attributes link.

It's best to choose a feature or attribute from an index rather than typing in the name -- so that you're searching on the feature exactly as it is categorized in Ulrich's records.

Frequency

Advanced Search:

You can limit your search results just to titles that are published a certain number of times a year in two ways:

(1) Choose a frequency from the drop down box as shown below:

(2) In a Search For field, you can type in a frequency or choose a frequency from the index (click the INDEX button to the left of the Search For field).

Boolean Search:

Enter fq= followed by the number of times a year a title is published, or a frequency term such as quarterly, monthly, daily, etc.

Note:

For a current list of frequency periods, use the drop down menu on the Advanced Search screen to change any index to Frequency, then click the INDEX button to the left.

You can also click BROWSE on the navigation bar and follow the Frequency link.

It's best to choose a frequency from an index rather than typing in the frequency -- so that you're entering a feature exactly as it is categorized in Ulrich's records.

ISSN

Advanced Search:

In a Search For field, you can type in a ISSN or part of one (see notes below).

Boolean Search:

Enter sn= followed by an ISSN or part of one (see notes below).

Quick Search:

Type in a ISSN or part of one (see notes below).

Note:

ISSNs can be entered with or without hyphens. You can enter the complete ISSN or just the first digit(s) followed by a wildcard symbol.

Keyword

Advanced Search:

In a Search For field, type in a keyword or keywords and ulrichsweb.com will search for those term(s) anywhere in the record.

Boolean Search:

Enter kw= followed by a keyword or keywords and ulrichsweb.com will search for those term(s) anywhere in the record.

Quick Search:

Type in a keyword or keywords and ulrichsweb.com will search for those term(s) anywhere in the record.

Language

Advanced Search:

You can limit your search just to titles that are available in a certain language in two ways:

(1) Choose a language from the drop down menu shown below:

It's not necessary to scroll down the drop down menu if you know the language you wish to choose. Simply type in the first letter of the language and ulrichsweb.com will jump you to that language (or the closest alphabetical match in the list).

(2) If you prefer, you can also enter a language name into a Search For field.

Boolean Search:

Enter la= followed by a language.

Note:

For a current list of all languages encompassed by ulrichsweb.com titles, use the drop down menu on the Advanced Search screen to change any index to Language, then click the INDEX button to the left.

You can also click BROWSE on the navigation bar and follow the Language link.

It's best to choose a language from an index rather than typing in the name -- so that you're searching on the exact name of the language as it appears in Ulrich's records.

Did you know?

Searching on a language will return titles that are printed in that language or which have a foreign language edition. For example, Scientific American can be found under la=english, but also under la=turkish, la=spanish, la=japanese and many others because Scientific American has many foreign language editions.

 

LC Classification Number

Advanced Search:

In a Search For field, type in an LC Classification Number (or the beginning of one).

Boolean Search:

Enter lc= followed by an LC Classification Number (or the beginning of one).

Note:

For a definition of LC Class(ification) Number, check the glossary.

You can enter the full LC Classification/Call number with spaces and punctuation or enter the first characters. For example, you could enter lc=AP2 or lc=SB118.48.

Media Type

Advanced Search:

In a Search For field, type in a type of media (see note below).

Boolean Search:

Enter mc= followed by a type of media (see note below).

Note:

Media type refers to categorizations such as: Directory, Diskette, Bulletin, DOS-based program, e-serials, academic/scholarly, consumer, newspaper, and many more.

For a current list of all media types encompassed by ulrichsweb.com titles, use the drop down menu on the Advanced Search screen to change any index to Media Type, then click the INDEX button to the left.

Media types are also available when you click BROWSE from a navigation bar.

It's best to choose a media type from an index rather than typing in the name -- so that you're searching on the exact name of the media type as it appears in Ulrich's records.

Personnel Name

Advanced Search:

In a Search For field, type in a person's name (see notes below).

Boolean Search:

Enter pn= followed by a person's name (see notes below).

Note:

Many ulrichsweb.com records contain the following personnel names:

  • editor
  • publisher (the person)
  • rights & permissions contact name
  • advertising contact

Price range

Advanced Search:

You can limit your search results just to titles that match the subscription cost parameters of your choice by entering those criteria into the fields described below.

First, choose a price type. There are two price types you can select from the drop down menu shown below -- individual and institutional:

Second, choose a currency.

It's not necessary to scroll down the drop down menu if you know the currency you wish to choose. Simply type in the first letter of the currency and ulrichsweb.com will jump you to that currency (or the closest alphabetical match in the list).

Third, enter a price range:

From the Advanced Search workspace, you can presort search results by price if you wish. Please note, however, that this is only a useful presort criteria if you have limited your search to one particular currency. For example, if you've limited your search to titles published in the US, presorting in ascending order by price will return search results that list the least expensive title first. If, however, your search results will mix (for example) US dollars, Candian dollars and Algerian Dinar, presorting by price will not be meaingful since ulrichsweb.com does not convert prices to a common currency.

Publication Code

Advanced Search:

In a Search For field, type in a publication code.

Boolean Search:

Enter pc= followed by a publication code.

Note:

Publication Code categorizes which Bowker title a record draws data from. These codes are:

  • TI - Elementary and High School titles
  • IR - Irregular serials and annuals
  • LT - Large type serials
  • LB - Law serials
  • ML - Titles listed in Magazines for Libraries
  • MB - Medical and healthcare serials
  • ST - Sci-Tech serials
  • UL - Regularly published serials

 

Publisher City

Advanced Search:

In a Search For field, type in the name of a city anywhere in the world.

Boolean Search:

Enter cy= followed by the name of a city anywhere in the world.

 

Publisher Name

Advanced Search:

You can limit your search results just to a certain publisher by entering the publisher's name in the field shown below:

 
Publisher State

Advanced Search:

In a Search For field, type in the name of a state in the United States, or territory or province.

Boolean Search:

Enter st= followed by the spelled-out state/province/territory name. For example, new york, new jersey, queensland, or puerto rico.

Or, type the abbreviation for the state (two letters for US), province or territory. For example, NY, NJ, QLD, PR.

 

Publisher/Distributor

Advanced Search:

In a Search For field, you can (1) type in the name of publisher or distributor or (2) type in a word in the name.

Boolean Search:

Enter pu= followed by a publisher or distributor name.

 

Reviewed In

Advanced Search:

You can limit your search to titles that have been reviewed by either Library Journal or Magazines for Libraries by choosing one of these resources from the drop down menu shown below:

 

 

Serial type:

Advanced Search:

You can limit your search to certain types of publications by clicking the appropriate checkboxes, as show below:

Sort results by

Advanced Search:

Choose how you'd like to presort your search results by choosing one of the following options from the drop down menu:

Once you've selected the sort criteria, you can choose ascending or descending sort order by clicking a radio button:

 

Start Year

Advanced Search:

You can limit your search results just to titles that began publication during a certain year or period of years by entering 4-digit years into the Start Year field shown below. To indicate a range of years:

To indicate a single year:

If you prefer, you can type in a publication start year in a Search For field.

 

 

Status

Advanced Search:

In a Search For field, type in one of the status options listed under "notes" below. You can also choose from three common statuses by clicking the appropriate checkboxes on the form:

Boolean Search:

Enter sc= followed by status (See note below).

Note:

Including a Status in your search will allow you to restrict the results of a search to citations having the status attributes listed below:

  • Active
  • Announced but never published
  • Ceased
  • Forthcoming
  • Research pending (the Ulrich's editorial staff is researching the status)
  • Suspended
  • Unverified

You can also click BROWSE on the navigation bar and follow the Status link.

It's best to choose a status from an index rather than typing in the status -- so that you're searching on the exact name of the status as it appears in Ulrich's records.

Subject

Advanced Search:

In a Search For field, type in a subject category.

Boolean Search:

Enter su= followed by a subject category.

Quick Search:

Type in a subject category.

Note:

For a current list of subject categories included in ulrichsweb.com, use the drop down menu on the Advanced Search screen to change any index to Subject, then click the INDEX button to the left.

It's best to choose a subject from the subject index rather than typing in any subject -- so that you're searching on the exact subject term as it appears in the Ulrich's subject heading file.

Title

Quick Search:

This is a title keyword search. When you enter a title into the Quick Search field, ulrichsweb.com searches for titles that have any of the word(s) you've entered in any title field (title, subtitle, abbreviated title, former title).
Title (Exact)

Advanced Search:

In a Search For field, type in a full and exact title. Leading articles (such as A, An or The and their foreign language equivalents) are not necessary. For example, you can enter "Monde" or "Le Monde."

Boolean Search:

Enter ti= followed by a full and exact title. Leading articles (such as A, An or The) are not necessary.

Note:

For a current list of titles included in ulrichsweb.com, use the drop down menu on the Advanced Search screen to change any index to Title (Exact) , then click the INDEX button to the left.

You can also click BROWSE on the navigation bar and follow the Title (Exact) link.

It's best to choose an exact title from an index rather than typing in the title -- so that you're searching on the exact name of the title as it appears in Ulrich's records.

Title (Keyword)
