WHAT IS ULRICHS PERIODICALS DIRECTORY?
Ulrichs Periodicals Directory is a bibliographic database providing detailed, comprehensive, and authoritative information on serials published throughout the world. It covers all subjects, and includes publications that are published regularly or irregularly and are circulated free of charge or by paid subscription. Ulrichs was first published in 1932. It was known initially as "Periodicals Directory: A Classified Guide to a Selected List of Current Periodicals Foreign and Domestic." This title continued through the third edition published in 1938. Then, with the 4th edition (1943), the title became Ulrichs Periodicals Directory: A Selected Guide to Current Periodicals, Inter-American Edition (with a focus on non-European titles because of the difficulty in getting information during WWII). From 1943-1965, the title was Ulrichs Periodicals Directory. Then, with the 11th edition in 1965, it became known as Ulrichs International Periodicals Directory, the title it held until the publication of the 39th edition in 2000, when it reverted to an earlier title, Ulrichs Periodicals Directory. It also incorporated Irregular Serials and Annuals in 1988. Whatever the name or the scope, Ulrichs remains the global source for periodicals information since 1932.

WHAT IS A SERIAL?
A serial is a publication issued over a period of time, usually on a regular basis (such as weekly or monthly), with enumeration used to identify issues (e.g. volumes, issue numbers, dates). Serials, unlike other multi-volume publications, are intended to be published indefinitely with no pre-determined end date. Monographic series or book series that bear a collective title also qualify as serials.

WHAT IS AN ISSN?
The International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) is an internationally accepted, concise, and unambiguous code for the identification of unique serial titles. One ISSN represents one serial title. The ISSN is multifunctional and is used as a component of bar codes, as a tool for the communication of basic information about a serial title, and for such processes as bibliographic control, ordering, billing, inventory control, abstracting and indexing, acquisitions, shelving, binding, cooperative cataloguing, circulation, and interlibrary loan. According to the National Serials Data Program at the Library of Congress (ISSN agency in the US), the ISSN
provides a useful and economical method of communication between publishers and suppliers, making trade distribution systems faster and more efficient.
results in accurate citing of serials by scholars, researchers, abstracters, and librarians.
is suitable for computer use in fulfilling the need for file update and linkage, retrieval, and transmittal of data.
is used in libraries for identifying titles, ordering and checking in, and claiming serials.
simplifies interlibrary loan systems and union catalog reporting and listing.
is used by the U.S. Postal Service to regulate certain publications mailed at second-class and controlled circulation rates.
is an integral component of the journal article citation used to monitor payments to the Copyright Clearance Center Inc.

HOW DO I MAKE CHANGES OR CORRECTIONS TO MY TITLE(S) LISTED IN ULRICHS?
We have a web-based system, BowkerLink, that publishers may use to update their existing titles online! The system is available 24x7, year-round, and it is designed to allow Publishers/Distributors to view, add, and/or update entries for their own titles. BowkerLink allows Publishers/Distributors to log into a secure environment, using a uniquely assigned ID and password, and make changes to their existing titles, or add new titles to their listings. BowkerLink™ will display only those items belonging to the Publisher/Distributor who has logged in. Visit BowkerLink at http://www.bowkerlink.com.
Alternatively, a computer-generated checklist, displaying information on a publication as it is listed in the Ulrichs database, is mailed annually to the publisher of that publication. All corrections and updates can be made directly on the checklist, and the checklist can be mailed or faxed to us. Checklists can also be generated on demand.
